Will any special facilities will be available for the disabled?
The Xinyi Shopping District adjacent to City Hall Square is sure to be considerably crowded during the New Year’s Eve event. That’s why, in the interest of safety, there will unfortunately be no designated areas reserved for disabled spectators. If you are disabled and want to experience the energy from our live show, we invite you to find a comfortable open area nearby, where you can view the on-stage entertainment on one of our large projector screens that will be set up in the area. This way we can ensure the safety of all while allowing everyone to revel in the same party atmosphere!

Dear Sirs and Madams,
I am writing to inform you that your corporation, XXX, has promised to sponsor an event, which violates the rights of people with disabilities in Taiwan. The event you are sponsoring is the New Year’s Eve Party, which will be held on December 31st in Taipei city.

The event organizers have announced that there will be no designated wheelchair seating areas for disab led audience. Rather, disabled audiences are suggested to “find a comfortable open area nearby…” where a projector and a screen are set up to view the party. By separating disabled people aside, the event organizers eliminate disabled people’s social participation in the society. As the event organizers fail to implement accessible accommodations, they have used “for the sake of safety and protection” as an excuse to void their social responsibility in providing equal access to all people. It is not only condescending, but such act has also clearly violates the UN convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

I am writing to urge you to reconsider your sponsorship to this discriminative and unlawful act. This is certainly NOT how you, as a world-renowned International corporation wants to spend your money on. M eanwhile, corporations like Seven-Eleven and Coca-cola are sponsoring another New Year’s event, which will be held on the same evening, but in Kaohsiung City, with designated accessible seating area to welcome disabled people. By comparison, what does this say about XXX’s value and belief? As you will be advertised as one of the sponsors, do you give your consent to participate in discrimination against disabled people’s rights by not providing equal access? Will you feel satisfied with the way that you are being represented by this New Year’s Eve Party?

I am writing to ask you to stand in solidarity with us to stop this harmful violation against disabled people in Taiwan. If you need any more information, I can be reached at sandieyi33@berkeley.edu

I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you very much.

Sincerely yours,
